Vaginitis and testing procedure
Vaginitis is defined as any condition with symptoms of abnormal vaginal discharge, odor, rritation, itching,or burning. The most common causes of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is implicated in 40% to 50% of cases when a cause is identified, with vulvovaginal candidiasis accounting for 20% to 25% and trichomoniasis for 15% to 20% of cases.
Bacterial vaginitis(B.V.):
Caused by Anaerobic bacteria (Prevotella, Mobiluncus, Gardnerella vaginalis, Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma) Symptoms:Fishy odor, thin and homogenous discharge that may worsen after intercourse, pelvic discomfort may be present
Vulvovaginal candidiasis(VVC) :
Caused by Candida albicans or other Candida species
Symptoms. White, thick, cheesy, or curdy discharge; vulvar itching or burning; no odor
Trichomonal vaginitis(T.V.):
Caused by Trichomonas vaginalis
Symptoms: Green or yellow, frothy discharge; foul odor; vaginal pain or soreness (Am Fam Physician. 2018;97(5):32 1-329)
